St. Mary's Marks 25th Anniversary of the ADA

ADA anniversary

Sunday, July 26th, marked the 25th Anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) Act, which brought legal protections for people with disabilities, as well as increased public understanding of obstacles faced by this population and the opportunities available for progress. Since the ADA Act became law numerous special issues facing children with disabilities, and children with medical complexity have emerged.

Eddie Simpser, MD, St. Mary’s President and CEO, offered some insights, “Many people recognize that advances in medical care and medical technology have helped to expand the nation’s geriatric population, by providing improved treatment options and outcomes.  Fewer realize, however, that these same factors are leading to an expanding population of children with medical complexity, as treatment allows children to survive and thrive in ways that were not possible just decades ago.”  Dr. Simpser added, “The ADA Act has been hugely beneficial and we at St. Mary’s are proud to celebrate its 25th Anniversary year."

St. Mary’s plans to mark the occasion of the 25th Anniversary of the ADA Act with a series of events and initiatives culminating in the fall and winter of 2015. Read more»

Golf Outing & Barbeque at Morefar Raises Significant Funds for St. Mary's Kids

Morefar Golf Outing

Yesterday’s high temperatures and humidity did not deter a sizeable number of avid golfers from hitting the greens at the prestigious Morefar Back O’Beyond Golf Club (Brewster, NY) for a Golf Outing to benefit the patients at St. Mary’s Hospital for Children. Co-hosted by John M. Cahill II, Principal at Cresa New York, and Joseph Goubeaud, Vice President at Petretti & Associates, the event included a day on the course and an outdoor buffet barbeque with cocktails. Nike was also present to fit each golfer with a pair of new golf shoes and socks. The event also included an auction, where one lucky golfer walked away with a Morefar foursome including cocktails, lunch and golf shirts. Golfers also got an opportunity to play with former NY Giants Tight-End Howard Cross and former NY Jets Linebacker Greg Buttle.

To date, the event raised over $100,000 for children with special needs.  All proceeds from the event will support St. Mary’s innovative programs and services that improve the health and quality of life for children with special healthcare needs and complex medical conditions and their families.

Meet Baby Penelope

Penelope2.jpg

Baby Penelope (Pennie) can light up a room with her happy smile. She is a brave baby who was born with a rare condition in which her brain doesn’t tell her body when to breath, the condition also affects a section of her bowels.

Pennie was transferred to St. Mary’s Hospital for Children to receive first-rate specialized care and respiratory therapy. Currently she has been weaned off the vent during waking hours, and can now breathe on her own while awake. Each day, Pennie gets stronger and is working on new milestones like sitting up, rolling over and eating food by mouth. Her progress has amazed her family, as well as the medical and therapist team at St. Mary’s.
