St. Mary's Summit Highlights New Findings and Options for the Medically Complex

summit photo

Recently, St. Mary’s teamed up with Family Residences and Essential Enterprises (FREE) to host a healthcare summit at John Jay College that served as a forum for advancing solutions for children and young adults with medically complex conditions and, for the first time, sought to accurately quantify the size of the most fragile children within this statewide population.

Independently commissioned research revealed there are 24,000 children in NY State who are considered medically fragile – most of whom are technology dependent and require 24/7 nursing care. As these children age out of pediatric programs, they are faced with fewer options to access nursing, residential, recreational and other essential supports and services. Panel sessions examined needs assessments, interventions, and models of care developed over the course of 2014 and 2015 to address the needs of this population.

Additionally, St. Mary’s has partnered with FREE to establish a group home pilot program specifically for the medically fragile population, thanks to funding from the NYS Office for People with Developmental Disabilities.
